2012 Teaching Materials Training Program for Local Chinese Teachers from foreign countries

Training Program for Local Chinese Teachers

I. Training Targets

As the "International Chinese Language Teaching Materials Program" is rolled out, Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters will host the Teaching Materials Training Program for Local Chinese Teachers from foreign countries so as to improve the quality of international Chinese language teaching, promote excellent Chinese language teaching materials of Hanban and provide specialized and diversified support for local Chinese teachers from foreign countries with respect to teaching and training materials, with 4,000 overseas trainees being expected to be invited to China.

II. Schedule

The timing for 2012 Training Program is temporarily set between June and December. All host universities should open at least one training class in each month. The training of each class will last 7 days (4 days of training + 1 day of cultural study + 2 days of round trip). The number of trainees in each class ranges from 60 to 90. If this number is less than 60 or more than 90, Hanban will make unified readjustment.

Hanban Overseas Representative Offices are responsible for coordinating the application of overseas trainees (including those recommended by Chinese Embassy (Consulate) and Confucius Institutes in respective countries) and, according to the specific training demands of trainees (including selection of teaching materials, timing for coming to China, and training sites and universities), responsible for launching preliminary examination on qualifications and making demand stock-taking. Information concerned should be submitted to Hanban at least 45 days before the class is offered. Overseas Representative Offices will, according the enrollment list approved by Hanban, help the trainees with visa application, insurance and flight reservation. Hanban will notify the host universities of the information of trainees one month before the class is opened.

III. Training Locations (11 universities)

Guangzhou: Sun Yat-Sen University.

Xiamen: Xiamen University.

Changchun: Jilin University.

Beijing: Beijing Foreign Studies University.

Beijing: Beijing Normal University.

Beijing: Peking University.

Haikou: Hainan Normal University.

Shanghai: East China Normal University.

Tianjin: Nankai University.

Wuhan: Wuhan University.

Dalian: Dalian University of Foreign Languages

IV. Application by Trainees

1. Qualifications

(1) Applicants should be Chinese language teachers of foreign nationality and Chinese citizens with permanent residence certificate of mainstream teaching facilities including universities, primary and secondary schools (full-time schools) who is younger than 60 years old, speak relatively fluent Chinese and enjoy good health.

(2) Applicants shall declare to abide by Chinese laws and refrain from compromising China's national security, damaging social and public interests and disrupting public order.

(3) Teachers who attended the 2010 and 2011 Teaching Materials Training Program for Local Chinese Teachers from foreign countries organized by Hanban cannot apply for this program. Those who have applied for the 2012 China Workshop Program for Foreign Chinese Language Teachers of Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters cannot apply for this program in the meantime.

(4) Trainees should submit the recommendation letter from work unit or a certificate of incumbency when enrolling.

2. Procedures

(1) Visit the webpage of teaching materials training of Hanban: http://training.chinese.cn to learn information, application approaches and procedures concerning the 2012 Teaching Materials Training Program, download training materials, resources and questionnaires and put forward suggestions for the training.

(2) Download and fill in the Application Form of 2012 Teaching Materials Training Program for Local Chinese Teachers from foreign countries which should be submitted through the Education/Culture Divisions of Chinese Embassy (Consulate) in respective countries, Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) and Hanban Overseas Representative Offices. Hanban Overseas Representative Offices will gather application information and launch qualification examination based on existing database and application requirements.

(3) Hanban Overseas Representative Offices will submit the list of qualified trainees, grouping plan and training demands to Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters for final judgment. Then, after the final judgment is made, Hanban will entrust the Overseas Representative Offices to issue Confirmation of Acceptance to trainees.

(4) Domestic host universities will issue registration notice and training course manual to trainees based on the admission results and training demands of trainees.

V. Training Contents

In line with real conditions of overseas teaching and suggestions come up with by previous trainees, the proportion of training on teaching methods and skills, culture and modern education technology will be increased on the basis of existing training on teaching materials. The overall training is divided into three types:

(I) Teaching materials (50%)

Aim to help trainees understand, know well and use key Chinese language teaching materials recommended by Hanban, including:

Chinese Paradise, Kuaile Hanyu (Happy Chinese), Learn Chinese with Me, Mandarin Teaching Toolbox as major teaching materials in primary and secondary schools, supported by My Chinese Picture Dictionary, My Little Chinese Picture Dictionary and Talking Posters for Chinese Teaching and other outstanding teaching materials.

New Concept Chinese, Contemporary Chinese, New Practical Chinese Reader, Great Wall Chinese, Mandarin Teaching Toolbox as major teaching materials in universities and for adult training, supported by My Chinese Picture Dictionary, Talking Posters for Chinese Teaching and other outstanding teaching materials.

(II) Teaching methods (30%)

Presentation, case study and demonstration class, among other methods will be used based on teaching materials compilation and overseas classroom practices to display and exchange practical Chinese language teaching methods and skills related to language elements and skills teaching; trainers and trainees will jointly produce teaching aids, such as assorting teaching plan, PPT used at classroom and test papers; inputs will be solicited from trainees on improving Chinese language teaching methods and the design of classroom activities; training and teaching experience will be collected and summarized from trainees.

(III) Culture and modern education technology (20%)

Lectures of all kinds which showcase Chinese culture will be launched based on real teaching demands, such as Chinese movie, music, painting, opera, literature and traditional Chinese medicine, among others, as a way to improve trainees' artistic appreciation on Chinese culture; training on practical skills will also be made available, including such as searching online, multimedia and modern teaching materials, and courseware production; activities such as cultural visit, teaching resources exhibition, and training achievement appraisal will be held.

During the proceedings of the training, trainees should submit various training results, such as teaching courseware, teaching plan and thesis. Within one month after the closing of the training, host universities should gather materials such as trainees’ training results and course videos and submit them to Hanban.

VI. Organization of trainers

1. Host universities are advised to identify the list of trainers and Hanban will organize a concentrated "pre-training for trainers" in June.

2. Trainers of host universities should be mainly Hanban-supported Chinese language teachers and volunteers who are familiar with features of Chinese language teaching materials and are equipped with experience of overseas Chinese teaching or teaching materials training. Overseas teaching forces to be invited should be not less than 1/3 of the total teaching forces.

VII. Training Expenses

The training program is free from tuition fee, accommodation expense and teaching materials fee.

Should trainees have difficulty in buying air tickets, they may apply for travel expense subsidy with Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters. The round trip air tickets will be handled by the Overseas Representative Offices of Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters.

VIII. Feedbacks and Follow-ups

1. Representative Offices, Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) and host universities should establish information database for trainees and submit the trainee information and training summary to Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters before the end of December.

2. Training Satisfaction Questionnaire will be handed out to collect, summarize and analyze trainees' feedbacks for the training. Host universities should keep close contact with trainees and launch follow-up survey on the usage of teaching materials after the training.

3. Hanban will launch review on the training work of host universities, which will become important indicators for evaluation on host universities.

IX. Follow-up Service

1. Training materials (including teaching plan, PPT, courseware and training video) will be offered to trainees free of charge after the training is finished.

2. Trainees will be provided with information of new teaching materials of Hanban on a regular basis.

3. Trainees will enjoy preferential conditions in applying for the member of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching.
